Leading the Way

Lead by example on mental health at work

Suggested Actions

Ensure leaders speak openly about mental health and wellbeing and lead by example

Leaders can share why mental health matters, acknowledge workplace pressures and respond constructively when employees raise concerns.

Role model healthy working behaviours such as taking breaks, setting boundaries and prioritising wellbeing

Leaders should take breaks, use annual leave and respect working-time boundaries themselves so these behaviours are genuinely acceptable for others.

Endorse, promote and participate in wellbeing initiatives and activities at a leadership level

Ask senior leaders to attend, introduce or visibly support relevant activity and follow up on the issues or commitments it identifies.
