Creating a Safe and Supportive Workplace
The Challenge
The Skate Sanctuary recognised that creating a safe and supportive workplace requires more than offering wellbeing initiatives. Because colleagues regularly support people who may be vulnerable, the organisation wanted to ensure staff felt psychologically safe themselves, confident raising concerns and supported when difficult situations arose. Staff needed to feel psychologically safe themselves if they were to confidently support others. The organisation wanted to create an environment where people felt respected, supported and able to raise concerns, while also ensuring clear boundaries were in place to protect staff wellbeing.
Approach in action
The Skate Sanctuary has intentionally created a culture where colleagues are recognised as whole people, with lives, responsibilities and experiences outside work. Flexible ways of working, an understanding of individual needs and a commitment to ensuring work is a source of support rather than pressure all contribute to creating a psychologically safe working environment.
Compassion is balanced with clear expectations and consistent boundaries. Staff are empowered to enforce organisational standards when behaviour becomes unacceptable and know they will be fully supported by leaders when doing so. By prioritising psychological safety over short-term business gain, the organisation helps colleagues feel confident that their wellbeing will be protected.
The organisation also fosters a culture of trust through regular communication, open leadership and opportunities for colleagues to contribute feedback. Mental Health Action Plans support tailored conversations about wellbeing, while colleagues naturally look out for one another, helping create an environment where support is embedded across the team rather than relying solely on managers.
Impact and learning
The Skate Sanctuary's experience demonstrates that creating a safe and supportive environment depends on both compassion and consistency. By combining emotional safety with clear expectations, colleagues feel trusted, valued and supported, enabling them to care for others while also looking after their own wellbeing. As the organisation grows, maintaining this culture remains a central priority.
Key takeaway for other employers
Creating a safe and supportive environment is about more than being kind. Building trust, setting clear expectations, protecting psychological safety and ensuring colleagues know they will be supported when challenges arise can help create a workplace where people feel secure, respected and able to do their best work.
