Responding to Individual Needs in an Emotionally Demanding Workplace

A man and a woman are seen sat down, speaking to an elderly woman with her back to camera about funeral plans

Full Circle Funerals is a micro private funeral director supporting individuals and families before, during and after bereavement. Working in a sector where exposure to grief, loss and trauma is part of everyday work, the organisation recognises the importance of creating a workplace where employee mental health is proactively supported alongside the needs of the people it serves.

The Challenge

Supporting people in emotionally demanding roles requires more than a standard approach to wellbeing. Full Circle recognised that colleagues will experience different challenges at different times and that support needs to reflect individual circumstances rather than following a one-size-fits-all model.

The organisation also understands that the emotional demands of funeral work can include exposure to vicarious trauma. Creating an environment where people feel safe, listened to and able to access support therefore became a core part of how the organisation operates.

Approach in action

Full Circle has embedded employee wellbeing into the way decisions are made across the organisation. Whenever changes to systems or ways of working are considered, leaders assess the potential impact on staff wellbeing and adapt plans where necessary to minimise unnecessary pressure or harm.

Support is tailored to individual needs rather than delivered through a standard process. Recognising that experiences such as grief affect people differently, the organisation encourages managers to take time to understand each person's circumstances, recognising that support may need to change over time rather than ending after an initial conversation. Wellbeing agreements are also being introduced to help ensure support reflects the needs of individual employees.

Impact and learning

Full Circle has found that placing wellbeing at the centre of decision-making helps create a workplace where people feel safe, listened to and valued. Its experience has reinforced that responding to people's individual needs requires flexibility, ongoing conversations and a willingness to adapt support as circumstances change, rather than relying on fixed processes.

Key takeaway for other employers

People's needs change over time, particularly during periods of grief, loss or other significant life events. Taking an individual approach and being prepared to adapt support can help create a workplace where employees feel understood, valued and able to remain at work where appropriate.
